What is Franked Form in Horse Racing?
Franked form is when a horse's past performance is validated by subsequent results from horses it raced against. It's one of the most reliable indicators of genuine ability in racing.
The Core Concept
When a horse finishes behind another runner, its form is considered "unfranked" until we see what happens next. If horses that finished ahead go on to win or place strongly in later races, the form is "franked" - proven to be legitimate.
Conversely, if a horse beat a weak field that continues to run poorly, that form is considered exposed or devalued.
Example: Franked Form
Horse A finishes 2nd behind Horse B at Randwick.
Two weeks later, Horse B wins at Group level.
Horse A's 2nd place is now franked - the form reference has proven its worth.
Example: Exposed Form
Horse C wins by 3 lengths at a country meeting.
The horses it beat all run poorly in their next starts.
Horse C's win is now exposed - it beat a weak field.
Why Franked Form Matters
Many races are won by horses with recent runs that look ordinary on paper - until you check what happened to the horses around them. Franked form separates:
- Genuine improvers from horses that just got lucky
- Quality fields from weak races
- Proven form from untested or exposed form
How Smart Money Uses Franked Form
Smart Money is a form-first system. Before any market signal is considered, we assess:
- SmartMoney Form Score - Our proprietary rating combining recent performance, class, and race structure
- Franked Form Analysis - Has the horse's recent form been validated by subsequent results?
- Race Suitability - Distance, track, conditions, and barrier draw
Only after a horse passes the form assessment do we look at market confirmation. If the market supports a horse with strong franked form, we have a high-conviction alert.
Form-First, Market-Confirms
This philosophy keeps us honest. We don't chase every market move - we identify horses with genuine credentials first, then use market activity as confirmation, not the primary driver.
